Vintage Cover Art: Fitzroy Edition of Jules Verne

Vintage Cover Art: Fitzroy Edition of Jules Verne

Many scholars translated the works of Jules Verne into English, but the single most prolific effort came from I.O. Evans. His translations, known as Fitzroy Edition of Jules Verne, comprised of sixty eight volumes and were highly successful commercially. It can be argued that modern annotated translations of Verne are more scholarly, but the Herculean effort of Evans is truly admirable.

Fitzroy Editions published by Ace had some great cover art. Here are a few samples:

  1. I am lucky enough to have picked up a copy of both The City in the Sahara and Into The Niger bend from a good bookshop, both are slightly battered but they just look to good to not buy. Having looked at the rest of the covers though, I feel a tad short chaged with ItNB cover in the excitement stakes.

    • I’ve got a copy of The City in the Sahara, but can’t find the first volume i.e. Into the Niger Bend. Absolutely frustrating. I usually like Fitzroy Edition artwork (The City in the Sahara was awesome) but yes, all covers in this series are not equally exciting.
